Hypoparathyroidism causes severe hypocalcaemia and defective skeletal metabolism. Treatment with calcium and vitamin D supplementation can cause kidney failure whilst native parathyroid hormone (PTH) requires repeated injections and causes renal impairment paralleling high peak and low trough PTH levels.
